can someone explain when to use sip-notify and when to use rtp-nte?

Both works perfectly.

router(config-dial-peer)#dtmf

router(config-dial-peer)#dtmf-relay ?

cisco-rtp Cisco Proprietary RTP
h245-signal DTMF Relay via H245 Signal IE
rtp-nte RTP Named Telephone Event RFC 2833
sip-notify DTMF Relay via SIP NOTmessages

in my opinion, if it is specified to use RFC2833, then you should use dtmf-repal rtp-nte.

But if this is in the lab exam shell we really ask to the proctor?

What the differnce between both?

My main question is what are the advantages and disadvantages/?>??

I don't think the proctor is going to tell you which one to use.

When you say both work what are you trying? Do both work when you send DTMF digits to CUE?

The last few 'real' SIP trunks I have done in production have all used rtp-nte. In my opinion I would say if you are integrating with a third party provider, more than likely you will use rtp-nte. Anytime you integrate with CUE you will always use sip-notify.

Have you been able to use G.729 w/ SIP in any of those production scenarios?

Yes. Up to 12.3.11T2, the software MTP only supported G729. When 12.3.11T3 came out it supported software MTP resources using G729 and G711. I have this configuration working in three different deployments.

Adam, Thanks for the info. Glad to hear they have G.729 working! I assume you meant to say Up to 12.3.11T2, the software MTP only supported G711 (not G729)?

Do you know if that is that rolled into the lab version 12.4(5b)?

Sorry, was out of town working. And sorry again, that's what I get for responding early in the morning. I meant to state 12.4.11T3. I do not believe this will be available in the lab.

so the bottom line is at this stage, we can not do G729 with sip (without MTP).

Cheers
